Digital and Technology Solutions Degree Apprenticeship

Network Engineer pathway

 

Summary:

Using fresh ideas and cutting-edge edge technologies – as an infrastructure engineer, you’ll work on projects that are revolutionising products and services that are used by millions of people every day.

You’ll combine this hands-on experience with virtual learning, delivered by our partner providers, including one-to-ones with tutors and mentors, lab tutorials, and proper research projects.

Description:

This is an exciting opportunity to earn as you learn. Joining DWP Digital on a permanent contract, you’ll work as part of a talented team delivering infrastructure engineering products and services. Alongside this, you’ll receive up to 4 years of formal learning, leading to a qualification in the Level 6 Digital and Technology Solutions Professional degree apprenticeship with Network Engineer pathway.

Designed in partnership and promoted by the University of Roehampton, you’ll develop crucial skills, knowledge and behaviours for your future career.

You’ll be supported by your line manager, skills coach and our infrastructure engineering community, including fellow apprentices on the programme – so you’ll have plenty of sources of encouragement to help you succeed.

What you will learn:

As an infrastructure engineer engaged on an apprenticeship with us, you will learn about and apply industry best practices.

Specific areas include:

  • Understand Systems Development
  • Maths & Algorithms
  • Data Communications & Network Security
  • Work Based Portfolio
  • Business Strategy
  • Research Methods
  • Work Based Project Synoptic Project
  • Developing Technology Strategy
  • Dissertation – Major Project (work based)

You will also select specialist modules in:

  • IP-Based Network Switching Systems 
  • Network Design 
  • Troubleshooting and Cyber Security 

What you’ll do:

You’ll work in our Technology Services team, where we develop and operate digital services for DWP. Our purpose is to deliver secure, effective and cost-efficient digital infrastructure services and to run live IT operations that promote DWP’s business objectives.

Working in this large-scale and fast-paced environment, you’ll help to:

  • Deliver a digital workplace that improves the way we work, helping to drive forward DWP’s digital transformation.
  • Deliver high-quality and resilient IT services and support through a Full Stack Service Model to meet existing and future network demand.
  • Build a world-class performance-focused user experience control centre, keeping the department functioning.
  • Exploit and enhance hybrid cloud services.
  • Protect and secure our services, ensuring citizens always have access to our key services.
  • Be part of our dedication to developing our people, capability and skills.

Qualification:

You’ll earn a Level 6 Digital and Technology Solutions Professional integrated degree alongside a BSc (Hons) Digital and Technology Solutions award from the University of Roehampton.

Essential criteria:

  • Demonstrable passion and interest in infrastructure engineering and/or related IT fields
  • Strong Maths and logical reasoning skills
  • A methodical, step-by-step approach
  • Attention to detail
  • Business skills like effective communication, teamwork and task/time management
  • Able to apply good practice approaches to relevant standards
  • Self-motivated, professional and open to continuous learning

You’re eligible for this role if you:

  • Hold a current United Kingdom (UK) or EAA Passport, and NI number
  • Have lived in the UK and/or EU for 3 years prior to the end of November 2020
  • Are eligible to work in the UK and will not be in full-time education by the end of November 2020
  • Will be aged 18 or over by the end of November 2020

And meet one of the below criteria:

  • An A-Level/BTEC Level 3
  • Or an apprenticeship in a similar subject (this will be at least a level 3)
  • Or an International Baccalaureate at Level 3

Alongside this, you’ll also need GCSE Maths and English A*-C or equivalent. 

You will not be eligible if you hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level in a similar subject. 

Things you need to know:

People working with government assets need to complete basic personnel security standard checks. If you’re successful, you’ll need to pass a disclosure and barring security check (DBS). And meet the security criteria before you’re appointed; the level of security needed is government baseline personnel security standard (BPSS). You will also be subject to a check on the Internal Fraud Database (IFD).

Please note that successful candidates will need to be available to start from the end of November 2020.
