Software Developer Level 4 Apprenticeship



Putting the user at the centre of everything we do, our software engineers use their logic, mathematical and problem-solving skills to develop apps and digital services that make a positive impact on millions of people’s lives.

Working with tools like Java, Node.js, Databases and concepts like containerisation and Test Driven Development, as a software engineering apprentice, you’ll gain the technical expertise to take your career in an exciting new direction.

You’ll also combine this hands-on experience with virtual learning, delivered by our partner providers, including one-to-ones with tutors and mentors, lab tutorials, and proper research projects.

This is an exciting opportunity to earn as you learn and get hands on practice of software development and engineering, while studying towards an industry-standard qualification. You’ll develop crucial skills, knowledge and behaviours for your career and be part of a great team delivering digital applications and services.

You’ll be supported by your line manager, skills coach and the software engineering community, as well as fellow apprentices on the programme, so you will have plenty sources of encouragement to help you succeed. It’s also critical that you can be proactive and make the most out of your time on the apprenticeship. There is a lot to do and learn, so you need to be ready to work hard and participate in the many opportunities you’ll be given.

  • Software Developer Level 4 Apprenticeship
  • BCS Diploma in Software Development Methodologies
  • Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA): HTML5 Application Development Fundamentals

If you’re curious, creative, motivated and have a passion to succeed, we want to hear from you. We’re keen to attract a broad range of applicants from diverse backgrounds.

We’re looking for apprentices who have the following:

  • Demonstrable passion and interest in software engineering and related IT fields
  • Strong Maths and logical reasoning skills
  • A methodical, step-by-step approach
  • Attention to detail
  • Business skills like effective communication, teamwork and task/time management
  • Able to apply good practice approaches to relevant standards
  • Self-motivated, professional and open to continuous learning

You’re eligible for this role if you:

  • Hold a current United Kingdom (UK) or EEA Passport, and NI number
  • Have lived in the UK and/or EU for 3 years prior to the end of November 2020
  • Are eligible to work in the UK and will not be in full-time education by the end of November 2020
  • Are aged 18 or over by the end of November 2020

And meet one of the below criteria:

  • Hold a Level 3 software apprenticeship
  • OR A Levels in a STEM* subject and successful completion of our aptitude test
  • OR BTEC Diploma in IT and successful completion of our aptitude test
  • OR 2 years’ experience in a relevant role and successful completion of our aptitude test

And do not hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level in a similar subject.

*STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths

Things you need to know:

People working with government assets need to complete basic personnel security standard checks. If you’re successful, you’ll need to pass a disclosure and barring security check (DBS). And meet the security criteria before you’re appointed; the level of security needed is government baseline personnel security standard (BPSS). You will also be subject to a check on the Internal Fraud Database (IFD).

Please note that successful candidates will need to be available to start from the end of November 2020.
